“AR offers chances you should use in any case.”
But imagination knows no limits. Pure Indoor-navigation becomes a unexpected experience, the mere display of products offers more fun through interaction and also exciting pricing strategies become part of the augmented reality. AR is a technology which, if used properly, provides a significant added value and drives increasing turnover. But it is not just marketing in which AR finds its deserved place.
AR as industrial technology
It is 08:00 in a hydroelectric power plant in Germany. Gert starts his control-tour with a cup of coffee. He always does it that
way, just like as he grabs his new AR helmet at 08:15 and devotes himself to “his” power plant. Through his display he looks at the turbine in front of him and checks the data that his expanded field of vision provides him. Everything seems to be all right today, he thinks. Then he notices a voice memo that his predecessor has left for him. Through gestures of his hand he opens the memo in his viewing panel and listens to the information. Then he checks a certain pipe again. Gert notes that the small documented crack has slightly increased and calls the maintenance service directly via his display.
His hands remain free and he again examines the damaged area thoroughly. Then he transfers his assessment into the open voice memo and triggers a maintenance process with a small movement of his hand, which his successor will take care of.
Fiction? Not even close! This kind of maintenance technology is just about to enter industrial practice triumphantly. Just like the use of depth-sense cameras for triggering load-management of containers, or the augmentation of engine blocks for a better analysis of errors or wear. AR is not just a new technology, it is our common future.
